Shawn Lawlor and the Canada Wood team in Japan have undertaken a tremendous amount of customer and stakeholder face-to-face research since the devastating ‘quake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11th of this year. This legwork has been rolled up into a well-written report which aims to gauge the impact of the event on the policy environment, future construction industry activity and prospects for Canadian wood products.

Canada Wood UK, Ontario Wood and the Quebec Wood Export Bureau will participate at Timber Expo and support The Wood Awards jointly. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our exhibition stand.
Timber Expo will bring leading suppliers and specifiers together for a combined conference and exhibition. The UK's only dedicated event for the timber industry will reveal a comprehensive display of applications for timber and serve as a showcase for wood in construction and sustainable building design.
The Wood Awards 2011 winners will be unveiled at a ceremony to be held at Timber Expo.

CE marking of construction products will become mandatory throughout the EU, including in the UK, in 2013 – the CE mark is in fact already applied to many construction products. A new Canadian Structural Timber brochure from Canada Wood UK provides a wealth of detail for understanding the requirements for structural timber as well as providing structural design values for Canadian strength-graded timber formerly in BS 5268: Part 2 now withdrawn and replaced with Eurocode 5. The publication is focussed on the needs of producers and buyers alike and provides much needed clarity of explanation.

As trees grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. Wood products are literally made of carbon dioxide which remains stored throughout their lifetime. Two Canadian research organisations completed a study on the carbon footprint of four wood products manufactured in the west coast of Canada and delivered to the UK, the aim being to help to address specifiers’ and designers’ increasing need for reliable scientific data. The research showed that very little energy is required to harvest trees, manufacture wood products and transport them to market, and confirmed that in all four cases the products represent a net carbon sink upon delivery.
Britain uses a large amount of timber, paper, boards and other wood products each year, and around 85% of this has to be imported. Britain must import wood products from somewhere if it is to avoid using more energy intensive and polluting materials instead. Canada is home to 10% of the worlds’ forests and contains more third-party certified and protected forests than any other country. What better place to source wood that is sustainably grown and legally harvested!
Canada Wood UK will represent the Quebec Wood Export Bureau and Western Red Cedar Export Association at the Canadian Pavilion at Ecobuild this year.
We welcome visitors interested to find out about Canadian softwoods, hardwoods, factory-built wood frame homes, flooring, cladding, forest management and much more.

The Timber Research and Development Association’s (TRADA) ‘In Touch with Timber 2010’ seminar was held in London on 18 May 2010. The one-day seminar was arranged to inspire construction industry professionals make the most of timber, both structurally and aesthetically, while providing an update on latest developments, ideas and innovations.
The event takes place annually, and this year's theme was 'Innovations in Timber', focussing on what has been and can be achieved with timber. The programme comprised of four inspirational seminars in the morning, including an insight into the design of the Woodwave roof structure used on the Richmond Oval Winter Olympic Stadium in Vancouver, provided by Paul Fast of Fast + Epp Engineers.
Alongside the seminar programme there was an exhibition showcasing timber-based products and services. Canada Wood UK was amongst eighteen organisations that supported the event, and arranged a stand from which partner association’s literature was distributed, samples shown, and technical advice provided.
The event was attended by approximately 150 architects, engineers, contractors, architectural technologists, surveyors, timber importers, and journalists.
TRADA is planning to launch a new UK show for the timber industry in June 2011, titled Timber Expo. The two-day event will comprise the highly informative In Touch With Timber conference and a supporting exhibition. TRADA aim to attract at least 100 exhibitors offering timber industry solutions and technogies. The location of the show has yet to be decided, but it is likely to be in the English Midlands region.
